Course Description

In the past, Human Resource Management (HRM) was called the personnel department. In the past, the personnel department hired people and dealt with the hiring paperwork and processes. More recently, however, the personnel department has divided into Human Resource Management and Human Resource Development, as these functions have evolved over the century. HRM is not only crucial to an organization’s success, but it should be part of the overall company’s strategic plan, because so many businesses today depend on people to earn profits. Strategic planning plays an important role in how productive the organization is.

This course is specifically designed to challenge you and provide the skills you need to confidently face today’s complex HR situations and compliance issues within your organization. It is aimed at introducing students to the principles and practice of contemporary Human Resource Management with a specific focus on the strategic role that it plays in helping organizations build and maintain competitive advantage. The course will explore the theory and practice of Human Resource Management across the following areas: workforce planning; ethical and legal frameworks for HRM; employee selection; training and development; performance management; compensation; employee relations; diversity management; health, safety and wellbeing; employee separation; and HRM in a global environment.

Course Objectives

This course will enable students to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic HR functions, and the theories, concepts, models, and methods that inform HR practice.
  • Apply HRM concepts and technical knowledge to the analysis of HRM problems, cases, and issues.
  • Identify and address conduct and systemic issues that give rise to claims and grievances
  • Understand emerging challenges in managing human resources; and be better equipped to manage risk arising in the workplace.
  • Analyze staff issues and consider how organizations recruit, train, develop, maintain and phase out employees;
  • Understand performance, training, and career developments appraisal and management.
  • Understand the governance of the employer-employee relationship, from internal and external perspectives.
  • Understanding of the role of the employment law and social law in the interdisciplinary approach to the management of the human resources in the public sector,
  • They will be able to compare the internal legal regulation with the foreign regulation with the goal to identify the possibilities for improvements of regulation and its implementation.
